About This Program

The Doctor of Divinity (D.D.) offered by Bethesda Biblical Institute is the highest level of theological scholarship available at the Institute, designed for those who have completed a Master's degree in Theological Studies or Religious Studies and are called to advanced academic research and scholarly ministry.

Offered through distance learning, the program comprises five examination subjects supported by an original supervised research thesis. The research topic — chosen by the candidate from a broad list of approved fields — is subject to approval by the Board of Theological Studies, ensuring academic rigour and relevance to the life of the church and the academy.

The program is uniquely structured to honour prior academic achievement: candidates who have already passed a Master's Degree in Theology or in Theology & Religious Studies in the first or second division may be considered by the Board for exemption from one or more examination papers — recognising and building on the scholarship they have already demonstrated.

Program Outcomes

  • Conduct original, independent research in an approved field of theology or religious studies, producing a thesis that makes a meaningful contribution to scholarship
  • Demonstrate advanced mastery of systematic theology and its application to contemporary ministry and academic discourse
  • Engage critically and analytically with the history of Christianity and the development of Christian thought
  • Evaluate and synthesise diverse religious studies literature, including comparative religion, in an academically rigorous manner
  • Communicate complex theological and religious ideas with clarity, precision, and scholarly integrity in written English
  • Lead, mentor, and equip others in theological education and advanced ministry with the authority of doctoral-level formation
